The Grand Wagoneer’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The LX doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

The Grand Wagoneer has standard Active Headrests, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Active Headrests system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The LX doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

In a Vehicle-to-Vehicle Frontal Crash Prevention 2.0 test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Jeep Grand Wagoneer achieved a “Acceptable” rating - the second highest possible - for its performance in forward collision warning and automatic braking systems, demonstrating its excellent capabilities in preventing collisions. The Lexus LX has not been tested.

Both the Grand Wagoneer and the LX have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors, available all wheel drive and around view monitors.

Jeep pays for scheduled maintenance on the Grand Wagoneer for 4 years and unlimited miles longer than Lexus pays for maintenance for the LX (5/unlimited vs. 1/10,000).

There are almost 10 times as many Jeep dealers as there are Lexus dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Grand Wagoneer’s warranty.

To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the Grand Wagoneer has a standard 830-amp battery. The LX’s 776-amp battery isn’t as powerful.

The Grand Wagoneer’s standard 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder produces 11 more horsepower (420 vs. 409) than the LX 600’s standard 3.4 turbo V6. The Grand Wagoneer’s optional 3.6 DOHC V6 hybrid produces 190 more horsepower (647 vs. 457) and 37 lbs.-ft. more torque (620 vs. 583) than the LX 700h’s standard 3.4 turbo V6 hybrid.

As tested in Car and Driver the Jeep Grand Wagoneer turbo 6 cyl. is faster than the LX 600 3.4 turbo V6:

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Jeep Grand Wagoneer uses regular unleaded gasoline (mid-grade octane recommended with the 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder engine for maximum performance). The LX requires premium, which can cost on average about 35.1 cents more per gallon.

The Grand Wagoneer has 8.6 gallons more fuel capacity than the LX 700h’s standard fuel tank (26.5 vs. 17.9 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The Grand Wagoneer has 5.4 gallons more fuel capacity than the LX 600’s standard fuel tank (26.5 vs. 21.1 gallons).

The Grand Wagoneer has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The LX doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

For better traction, the Grand Wagoneer has larger standard tires than the LX (275/55R20 vs. 265/55R20). The Grand Wagoneer’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the LX (285/45R22 vs. 265/55R20).

The Grand Wagoneer’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 65 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the LX 700h Overtrail’s standard 70 series tires. The Grand Wagoneer’s optional tires have a lower 45 series profile than the LX’s optional 50 series tires.

The Grand Wagoneer has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The LX doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

For superior ride and handling, the Jeep Grand Wagoneer has fully independent front and rear suspensions. An independent suspension allows the wheels to follow the road at the best angle for gripping the pavement, without compromising ride comfort. The Lexus LX has a solid rear axle, with a non-independent rear suspension.

The Grand Wagoneer has standard front and rear stabilizer bars, which help keep the Grand Wagoneer flat and controlled during cornering. The LX base model’s suspension doesn’t offer a rear stabilizer bar.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Grand Wagoneer’s wheelbase is 10.8 inches longer than on the LX (123 inches vs. 112.2 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Grand Wagoneer is 2.5 inches wider in the front and 2.2 inches wider in the rear than on the LX.

The Grand Wagoneer 4x4 handles at .76 G’s, while the LX 700h Overtrail pulls only .68 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The Grand Wagoneer 4x4 executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.3 seconds quicker than the LX 700h Overtrail (28.1 seconds @ .65 average G’s vs. 29.4 seconds @ .56 average G’s).

For greater off-road capability the Grand Wagoneer has a greater minimum ground clearance than the LX (8.4 vs. 7.9 inches), allowing the Grand Wagoneer to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Grand Wagoneer Air Suspension’s minimum ground clearance is 2 inches higher than on the LX Luxury/Ultra Luxury/F Sport (10.1 vs. 8.1 inches).

The design of the Jeep Grand Wagoneer amounts to more than styling. The Grand Wagoneer has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .364 Cd. That is lower than the LX (.376). A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the Grand Wagoneer get better fuel mileage.

The front grille of the Grand Wagoneer uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The LX doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The Grand Wagoneer uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The LX doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

As tested by Car and Driver while cruising at 70 MPH, the interior of the Grand Wagoneer 4x4 is quieter than the LX 600 F Sport Handling (67 vs. 68 dB).

The Grand Wagoneer Quadra-Trac II can be flat towed on all four wheels (dinghy towed), allowing recreational vehicle owners to bring it with them on the road. When they reach their destination, the Grand Wagoneer can be unhitched and driven around locally. The LX can’t be towed flat on the ground.
