The Jeep Grand Cherokee has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags help prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Envision doesn’t offer a front passenger side knee airbag.

A passive infrared night vision system optional on the Grand Cherokee Overland/Summit helps the driver to more easily detect people, animals or other objects in front of the vehicle at night. Using an infrared camera to detect heat, the system then displays the image on a monitor in the dashboard. The Envision doesn’t offer a night vision system.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee (except Laredo)’s optional360-degree camera can be optionally equipped with washers for its front and rear cameras, ensuring crystal-clear visibility in any weather condition. Conversely, the Buick Envision only offers a rear camera washer, which may not provide the same level of all-weather performance.

The Grand Cherokee Summit’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Envision doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the Grand Cherokee and the Envision have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, available all wheel drive and around view monitors.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Jeep Grand Cherokee is safer than the Buick Envision:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH and into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the Jeep Grand Cherokee is safer than the Buick Envision:

Warranty

The Grand Cherokee’s corrosion warranty is unlimited miles longer than the Envision’s (unlimited vs. 100,000 miles).

Jeep pays for scheduled maintenance on the Grand Cherokee for 2 years and unlimited miles. Jeep will pay for oil changes, tire rotations, air filter replacements, cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance (up to 2 visits). Buick doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the Envision.

There are almost 3 times as many Jeep dealers as there are Buick dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Grand Cherokee’s warranty.

Engine

The Grand Cherokee’s standard 3.6 DOHC V6 produces 65 more horsepower (293 vs. 228) and 2 lbs.-ft. more torque (260 vs. 258) than the Envision’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The Grand Cherokee 4xe’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid produces 147 more horsepower (375 vs. 228) and 212 lbs.-ft. more torque (470 vs. 258) than the Envision’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder.

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the Grand Cherokee 4xe running on electricity gets better mileage than the Envision (57 city/56 hwy MPGe vs. 22 city/28 hwy).

The Grand Cherokee 4xe can travel with zero emissions for 26 miles. The Envision can’t move without running its internal combustion engine.

Regenerative brakes improve the Grand Cherokee 4xe’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The Envision doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

The Grand Cherokee 4xe’s standard fuel tank has 2.9 gallons more fuel capacity than the Envision (19 vs. 16.1 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The Grand Cherokee’s standard fuel tank has 6.9 gallons more fuel capacity than the Envision (23 vs. 16.1 gallons).

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Grand Cherokee’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Envision:

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Grand Cherokee has larger standard tires than the Envision (245/70R17 vs. 235/60R18). The Grand Cherokee Summit Reserve’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Envision (275/45R21 vs. 245/45R20).

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Grand Cherokee Summit Reserve has standard 21-inch wheels. The Envision’s largest wheels are only 20-inches.

The Grand Cherokee has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The Envision doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

The Grand Cherokee offers an optional full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the Envision; it requires you to depend on a temporary spare, which limits mileage and speed before replacement.

Suspension and Handling

The Grand Cherokee Trailhawk has active sway bars, which help keep it flat and controlled during cornering, but disconnect at lower speeds to smooth the ride and offer greater off-road suspension articulation. This helps keep the tires glued to the road on-road and off. The Envision doesn’t offer an active sway bar system.

The Grand Cherokee offers an optional automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The Grand Cherokee’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The Envision doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

The Grand Cherokee has vehicle speed sensitive variable-assist power steering, for low-effort parking, better control at highway speeds and during hard cornering, and a better feel of the road. The Envision doesn’t offer variable-assist power steering.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Grand Cherokee’s wheelbase is 7.3 inches longer than on the Envision (116.7 inches vs. 109.4 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Grand Cherokee is 2.1 inches wider in the front and 2.1 inches wider in the rear than on the Envision.

Passenger Space

The Grand Cherokee has 6.6 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Envision (107 vs. 100.4).

The Grand Cherokee has .3 inches more front headroom, .9 inches more front legroom, 2.3 inches more front hip room, 2.5 inches more front shoulder room, .5 inches more rear headroom, 8.9 inches more rear hip room and 2.1 inches more rear shoulder room than the Envision.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Grand Cherokee’s rear seats recline. The Envision’s rear seats don’t recline.

Cargo Capacity

The Grand Cherokee has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Envision with its rear seat up (37.7 vs. 25.2 cubic feet). The Grand Cherokee has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Envision with its rear seat folded (70.8 vs. 52.7 cubic feet).

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the Grand Cherokee. The Envision doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

Towing

The Grand Cherokee’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the Envision’s (3500 vs. 1500 pounds). Maximum trailer towing in the Buick Envision is only 1500 pounds. The Grand Cherokee offers up to a 6200 lbs. towing capacity.

The Grand Cherokee 4WD with optional equipment can be flat towed on all four wheels (dinghy towed), allowing recreational vehicle owners to bring it with them on the road. When they reach their destination, the Grand Cherokee can be unhitched and driven around locally. The Envision can’t be towed flat on the ground.

Servicing Ease

The engine in the Grand Cherokee is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the Envision. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

Ergonomics

Unlike the driver-only memory seat and mirrors in the Envision, the Grand Cherokee Overland Luxury Tech/Summit has a passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position (with optional power wheel adjuster), outside mirror angle and radio stations and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The Grand Cherokee Overland/Summit’s front and rear power windows all open or close with one touch of the switches. The Envision’s rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to close them fully.

The Grand Cherokee’s standard speed-sensitive wipers speed up when the vehicle does, so that the driver doesn’t have to continually adjust the speed of the wipers. The Envision’s standard manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

Consumer Reports rated the Grand Cherokee’s headlight performance “Good,” a higher rating than the Envision’s headlights, which were rated “Fair.”

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the Grand Cherokee to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Envision doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

Both the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Buick Envision offer exterior mirrors that can be folded to provide convenience. The Grand Cherokee offers available power folding mirrors, which allow for easy, one-touch folding or unfolding at the driver’s discretion. This provides added convenience when maneuvering or parking, as well as when walking past the parked vehicle. In comparison, the Envision’s foldable mirrors are manual, requiring the driver to get out and physically fold them once parked and unfold them before getting in.

Optional air conditioned front and rear seats keep the Grand Cherokee’s passengers comfortable and take the sting out of hot leather in summer. The Envision doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats in the rear.

The Grand Cherokee has a standard dual zone air conditioning allows the driver and front passenger to choose two completely different temperatures so people with different temperature preferences won’t have to compromise. This makes both the driver and front passenger as comfortable as possible. Dual zone air conditioning costs extra on the Envision.

Model Availability

The Grand Cherokee is available in both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The Envision doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

Recommendations

The Jeep Grand Cherokee outsold the Buick Envision by almost five to one during 2024.
